Ask Questions > Wicked Questions
Hello Michael, you are posing an insightful question.
I have found starting with “How is it that we are…” framing for a Wicked Question does two very positive things:
1. Most big paradoxical challenges have been in play for a considerable time and there are nascent or poorly distributed solutions “hidden” away in the organization or community. Framing this way ignites an appreciative search for these hidden solutions. Even if the solutions are small, they help generate MORE confidence about shaping the future together with the resources at hand. Part of the reason is you are unearthing “social proof” that progress on the challenge is possible.
2. Framing this way helps avoid generating nasty or data questions that immobilize rather than activate.
I hope this helps you. Wicked Questions are very powerful and subtle. The context in which you are using WQ may make a difference. You can request a phone or Skype consult if needed.
Appreciatively, Keith
Hi,
I´m struggling a bit with the way the question is asked, i.e. "How is it that..."
whcih makes it look like the opposites are already there, enacted.
Wouldn´t it be an option to ask " Haw would it be if we were..." (then stating the opposites in the same way as in the original question).
I´m grateful for your suggestions
Cheers
Michael
