Ask Questions > Modifying 1, 2, 4 All to generate ideas for remote teams
I am writing to share an idea. I recently had a situation where I needed to generate ideas with a group of 48 individuals in a fully remote setting. I also wanted to make sure that each individual had their voice heard. The meeting needed to be interactive and needed to generate a decision by the end of the meeting.
I decided to modify the 1, 2, 4 All liberating structure to achieve this. Rather than having individuals come up with ideas on their own, I split the group of 48 into 4 different meeting rooms. These break-out groups were called Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D. All groups were given a certain amount of time to brainstorm and discuss ideas. Then, Group A and Group B were combined into a single group which became Group AB. At the same time, Groups C and D were combined into Group CD. These new, combined groups were given time to present their ideas to each other and brainstorm, after which we combined again into a single "all" group.
The result was a very thorough discussion with each individual feeling safe to share their ideas in the smaller break-outs with the best ideas making it through the final round.
Break-outs: 4 workspaces – 15 Minutes Group A Group B Group C Group D 2 workspaces – 15 minutes Group AB Group CD 1 workspace – 15 minutes Group ABCD
